first off. [ wait for it]
i love string art. [and yes I am probably watching way too much How I Met Your Mother]
just google/pinterest/etsy search string art & you will see hundreds of creative ideas.
i knew this would make a perfect wedding gift for our friends N&L because they both grew up in the state of Iowa & attended the University of Iowa. {everyone knows it is the coolest school to go to} so i did my research and found one very good blog post with detailed instructions. here is hers:

so i jumped in. it turned out fairly well. here is the very basic sequence {see blog above for better detailed instructions}
step 1. purchase supplies: i got my board, paint & string from Michaels, i had to make a trip to K-Mart for nails
Step 2. paint I used a medium gray Folk Art acrylic paint
Step 3. Print a map from online, cut out outline & heart shape
Step 4. being to outline heart then state with nails & remove paper when done
Step 5. weave thread around nail heads a million times [as you can see I overlapped, she did not]
finished product against a blank wall, overall it turned out great!
to finish the gift we wrapped it in a pretty bag & sent it to the lovely couple on their wedding eve with the other DIY gifts.
i want to make another one for our Hawkeye themed basement. if when we do this project again there are only a few things i would change. i like the spacing of the nails but i am not sure I am a complete fan of the thickness of the string. {i would go much thinner} when we do this project i may paint the board black or yellow using either white or black string. not exactly sure yet. but i will be sure to share pictures of take 2.
