storage room shelving unit & organization- [progress]

YAY! First home update blog post!!
[ps. the collage pictures are sort of small but it was better than adding a  gagillion pictures to the post and if you click on them they do get somewhat larger]

needless to say we have been short on space in our quaint but adrobs home. which is pretty impressive when you consider the fact that we are both 20 somethings and i don't even have a job yet. {yes we have collected lots of thrift store/craigslist finds and hand-me downs} when we reached the point where we couldn't close the door to our basement storage room - we knew it was time to do something. lucky for us that time coincided well with the move of one of our bestest friends Jon. who may or may not be a construction engineer [7 years later]. ian and jon created a plan maximally utilizing storage space, re-purposing wood that we already owned.

FIY: the storage room contains - one freezer, one large dehumidifier, luggage, childhood memorabilia X3-4 plastic tubs, holiday decorations X3 large plastic tubs (+including 2 small size artificial Christmas trees), wrapping paper, cards, craft supplies, extra dining room table chairs (not refinished yet), loads of office/school supplies

in the process we got rid of donated 3-4 tubs of toys/clothing

here is the project breakdown from start to finish:
-empty storage room
-tear out existing corner cabinet
-sweep/mop clean
-dry wall a few areas with exposed beams (this was more for experience than anything)
-construct a shelving system using 2X4's
-finish off shelving system by re-purposing wood from torn out shelves
-organize and de-clutter utilizing large plastic tubs

total cost: ~$188
Dry wall - $26
Wood - $52
Saw - $110 **now don't have to purchase one for later projects!
Plastic tubs - free because we already owned them

move in condition [pre sump-pump placement]:
a. looking directly in from the door
b. our unorganized under the stair storage
c. sweet freezer - ps. we are keeping the magnet forever
d. from the corner under the stairs looking towards the door

after clearing the room out we tore out the super useless built in bookshelf system. i have no good pictures of this point.

after emptying the room out and tearing out the built in shelving unit:
a. looking from under the stairs towards the door
b. under the stairs
c. looking in from the door
d. just a small glimpse of the chaos that was our basement when we "unpacked" this small room

the drywall hanging process:
we decided that we are planning to leave it untrimmed and painted for now. our resources are much better spent on other parts of our home.

progress:

after [but not complete]

a. looking from under the stairs towards the door
b. under the stairs - lots of room left and empty plastic bins YAY!
c. looking in from the door - some of what is left will be moved to the garage when it warms up for some spring cleaning
d. another view from the far corner of the room

clearly, we aren't finished with this project
in the future we plan to:
- paint the rest of the wall gray where we tore out the old cabinet & possibly re-paint the floors too
-continue to reorganize and label boxes
-move the left over wood scraps to the garage

but for now we are very happy with the results
